One of the perks of living in Key West is most of the year you can dive for lobsters. We have spiney lobsters in Key West , they don’t have claws. People say Maine lobsters taste better but screw them, how often are they freediving for Maine lobsters, not very often I don’t think.
Anyways there are lobsters all over the rocks and reefs which surround Key West, there is a fair amount of skill involved but not that much barrier to entry. You need to be able to swim under water , and you will need a net or snare, and a pair of gloves. They can be anywhere from very shallow to very deep water. Oh and Florida fishing license with a lobster stamp.
They are extremely easy to catch at the beginning of the season and mini-season, but they are out there all year. It’s kind of odd to me that people get all hyped up and go out on mini-season, but then don’t go again until next mini-season, they are always some out there.
While you are looking for lobsters, you can see other interesting stuff like purple corals and barracuda.
It is amazing to me that people live in Key West and never go out in the water, but then I have found that people are amazed that I live in Key West and don’t go drinking at the many bars.
